LG Twins' Shin Min-jae used his shrewd play to defeat the KIA Tigers.
Shin Min-jae started at second base in the No. 9 spot in the lineup against KIA in the 2024 Shinhan Throw Bank KBO League at Jamsil Stadium on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Thanks to Shin, who rocked KIA at the plate and on the bases, LG was able to pull off a 7-6 come-from-behind victory.
With his team trailing 1-5 in the fifth inning, Shin Min-jae showed a focus that caught his opponent off guard.
On a two-ball, two-strike count, Shin was called for a strike on Kia starter James Nail's seventh pitch.
Shin Min-jae looked like he was going to strike out, but catcher Kim Tae-goon failed to make the catch. Since it was a strikeout, Kim had to either catch the ball and tag the runner or throw to first base.
However, Kim made a mistake and caught the ball and threw it to Nail. A surprised Nail threw to first base, but Shin Min-jae had already stepped on first base.
Shin Min-jae's surprise run, which didn't take advantage of his opponent's mistake, allowed LG to connect with runners on first and second. Nail, on the other hand, seemed to be shaken by Shin's unexpected run and threw a hard-hit ball to center field on the next pitch.
With the bases loaded, LG responded with a two-run single to right by Park Hae-min. With runners on first and second, Moon Sung-joo singled to left to score another run.
Shin Min-jae was not left out as LG rallied from 4-6 down in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Shin singled up the middle with runners on first and second. Center fielder Choi Won-joon, who caught the ball, dropped the ball once, allowing second baseman Oh Ji-hwan to cross home plate and bring KIA within one run.
After Koo Bon-hyeok singled to center field, Park Hae-min singled to right field 토토사이트 to put runners on first and second.
Park Dong-won, who was on second base, made it home with time to tie the game. While the Kia defense tried to catch Park Hae-min trying to steal second base, first baseman Shin Min-jae ran nonstop and stole home through third base.
Kia shortstop Park Chan-ho realized this and threw the ball home, but Shin Min-jae crossed the plate first and scored. It was the first run of the day for LG.
"The opposing catcher was supposed to come to get me, but he was walking toward the pitcher," Shin said after the game, recalling his run in the fifth inning in a strikeout-no-out situation. "I thought he could see me running, so I deliberately turned around and ran behind him (the catcher)," he explained.
"It wasn't an act. I was just trying to save my life," he laughed, but it was a moment of concentration that kept him on his toes. "I thought, 'No matter if (the catcher) throws the ball to the pitcher or throws it to me (to first base), I have to run in that situation,'" Shin said.
Even with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, he didn't miss the gap in the opposing defense. "My brother Kim Sun-bin, the second baseman, caught the ball (on a grounder from the center fielder) and I tried to see where he threw it. When I stepped on third base, I saw that (pinch-hitter) Hae-min was going to second base. (The opposing defense) took one look at the second base side, and I thought I could win the game at home, so I made a decision at that moment," he explained.
With the victory, LG smiled for the first time in four meetings with KIA this season. "I would like to praise all the players for not giving up in a difficult situation and showing their focus to the end," said LG head coach Yeom Kyung-yup.
